The publication of the EU definition of nanomaterials in 2011 has catalysed widespread production of legislation seeking to identify and control nanomaterials, both within the EU and beyond. Legislation has emerged which is specific to industrial sectors, such as cosmetics, biocides and foods, and also as national registration schemes, for example in France and Belgium. The challenges posed to providers of characterization technology concern the specific nanomaterial definitions adopted and the guidelines concerning measurement methodologies. This webinar will review legislation and best available methods for nanomaterial characterization. It will also consider the inherent difficulties in proving when the case is negative, i.e. “mine is not a nanomaterial”.
