Extrudate cutter accessories combined with die swell measurement.

  • Prevent gravitational extension and thinning of the extrudate diameter during die swell measurement.

The Rosand Die Cutter and Melt Cutter options are designed to be used in conjunction with a die swell measurement unit to ensure that elongation of extrudate due to tension under gravity does not cause thinning of the strand.

  • The Die Cutter unit incorporates a blade that automatically cuts across the face of the die when the end of the extrudate strand reaches a sensor placed below the die swell measurement unit.
  • The Die Cutter unit operates on left-hand bore of the rheometer.
  • The Melt Cutter unit incorporates an electromechanical scissor-cutter that automatically cuts the extrudate when the end of the strand reaches a sensor placed below the die swell measurement unit and Melt Cutter blades.
  • The single strand Melt Cutter unit operates on the left-hand barrel of the rheometer.
  • A twin strand Melt Cutter unit is available for extrudate cutting that operates on both rheometer barrels. 

Malvern recommend testing of a Die or Melt Cutter accessory to ensure compatibility with a particular sample type under the required extrusion conditions. Please contact Malvern for further advice and/or a sample test and evaluation report.

Die Cutter (Rosand RH2000 model only)

Extrudate cutting:
Single strand only (left hand barrel of rheometer).
Die to cut distance:
0mm
Die to sensor distance:
85mm.
Recommended maximum shear rate:
1000s-1 (Note maximum operational shear rate is material and die dependent).
Die swell:
Includes single axis laser die swell unit.
Dies:
Uses special Die Cutter dies with exit faces flush with bottom of rheometer barrel. Available for 15mm barrel with 180° (flat) entry angle. Die bore diameters are 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 2.0mm.

Melt Cutter (Rosand RH7/10 or RH2000 models)

Extrudate cutting:
Single strand (cuts left hand rheometer barrel). Twin strand (cuts both rheometer barrels).
Die to cut distance:
100mm to 160mm.
Die to sensor distance:
150mm to 210mm (50mm below cut).
Recommended maximum shear rate:
1000s-1 (Note maximum shear rate is material dependent).
Die swell:
Single strand Melt Cutter includes single axis die swell unit. Twin strand Melt Cutter includes single axis (twin extrudate) laser die swell unit.
Dies:
Compatible with standard or Die Cutter types.
Sensor type:
Reflectance sensor as standard. Ultrasonic sensor available as an option for low reflectance/black samples.
