A haul off system is principally used to measure melt strength of the polymer extrudate from the rheometer.

  • Extrudate from the capillary die is threaded around a special low friction pulley arrangement attached to a precision balance (used as a load cell), and is then fed through a nip roll arrangement which is driven by a motor attached to the side of the rheometer unit.
  • The test is performed by measuring the melt tension (force) as a function of haul off speed, or as function of time at discrete haul off speeds.
  • A haul off option with take-up spool is also available – whereby the extrudate thread is subsequently wound up onto an interchangeable spool.
  • Even lay down of the extruded fiber onto the take-up spool is achieved by guiding the thread between two non-driven PTFE guide pulleys mounted on to a reciprocating traversing unit.
  • The spooled fibers are then available for easy storage or post-test analysis by other analytical techniques.
