The Viscotek UV detector is sold as an addition to the Viscotek TDAmax to complete a Tetra Detector format, or as a stand-alone module for connection to other chromatography components such as the 270max or the SEC-MALS 20.

A pump, such as the GPCmax, and some form of injection device, such as a manually actuated valve or autosampler, creates a flow of mobile phase through a UV detector flow cell.

With the TDAmax system, this flow cell is situated within the detector array housing itself.

Light from the UV detector is passed through the flow cell via fiber-optic cables. Compounds with a UV chromophore give a response on the detector, which is directly proportional to the concentration. The UV detector measures absorbance at the user-specified wavelength.

The OmniSEC software records the absorbance data as a chromatogram along with all the other data channels.  This is then used to calculate concentration or conjugate data depending on the analysis settings in the software.
