Fraser McNeil-Watson, Technology Leader at Malvern Instruments, will present ‘Particle Sizing Characterization and its Importance in Energy Applications’ as part of an educational workshop that provides an ‘Introduction to nanomaterials for energy applications’. The workshop on 19 February at University College London leads into NANOENERGY, the International Conference on Nanotechnology, Nanomaterials & Thin Films for Energy Applications, on 20 and 21 February. Malvern is a major sponsor of the conference during which Ciaran Murphy, Head of Product Management at Malvern, will present a paper discussing ‘Nanomaterial Characterization Challenges’. Dr McNeil-Watson’s workshop presentation will explore the importance of detailed nanoparticle analysis within the development of emerging nanomaterial energy technology. He will focus on how physical nanoparticle features impart core functionality to energy technology and will demonstrate how analytical techniques, such as dynamic light scattering, offer insight into many of these key physical properties. These include nanoparticle size, shape, surface area, surface energy and surface chemistry. The workshop, presented by academic and industry leaders, is aimed at students or non-experts who are looking to expand their understanding of energy and nanotechnology.

In his conference presentation Ciaran Murphy will discuss how the current EU definition of nanomaterials is driving the need for higher resolution measurement capabilities. He will review some of the latest development activity using light scattering techniques and separations devices aimed at addressing the requirements for number-based (quantitative) measurement on nanomaterials. The work described focuses on the characterization of metallic nanoparticles (silver, gold) and how separation devices (FFF, GPC, Fluidics) can be combined with detectors to offer an improvement in the resolution currently available and in line with the demands of the EU nanomaterials definition.

Zetasizer Nano instruments use light scattering techniques to measure particle size, zeta potential, protein charge and molecular weight. Viscotek gel permeation/size exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC) systems measure absolute molecular weight, mass, size, concentration and the molecular structure of proteins, polymers and other macromolecules.
