The production of blended cements with different additives is a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the cement industry. A variety of completely or partly amorphous materials are used as additives, like slag, fly ash, silica, pozzolana and others. Controlling these additives quantitatively is essential in order to guarantee the cement norms. Of special interest is the quantification of amorphous content. X-ray diffraction in combination with Rietveld analysis allows a quantification of complex materials like blended cements.

Panelist information: Thomas Witzke, Application Specialist XRD, PANalytical B.V., the Netherlands.
Thomas Witze studied mineralogy at the Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany and wrote his Ph.D. thesis on characterization, structure modeling and Rietveld refinement of layered hydroxide structures at the University Halle, Germany. Other university work included the development of a new fertilizer, building materials, and natural alteration processes. At PANalytical, Thomas works as application specialist for building materials and Rietveld quantification.
