To avoid pollution caused by run-off of nitrate-based fertilizers, the use of such agrochemicals is being more tightly controlled. Nitrate loss into ground water is directly dependent on the texture and particle size of the soil being treated. Laser diffraction particle size analysis is now playing a role in predicting nitrate loss via the soil in different locations, aiding the process of selecting the correct dosing rate.
