“Guess the particles” Pittcon’s contest – Winner is now disclosed!

shutterstock_604879496-300x270As in years past, Malvern Panalytical attended the annual Conference and Expo for the opportunity to meet with current and prospective customers and showcase our latest characterization technologies. Sunny Orlando, Florida was a great backdrop (especially for the many Malvern Panalytical employees thankful to be out of the cold weather in the Northeast) for conversations during the week regarding various application challenges, customer pains, and how our technologies can help increase one’s characterization capabilities.

In many cases, Pittcon provides visitors with their first in-person look at the various technologies in our product portfolio. This year’s booth featured a wide range of complementary instruments including the newly launched Morphologi 4-ID, Epsilon 4, and LeDoser 12. Those new products were joined by our Mastersizer 3000, Zetasizer, Aeris, Epsilon 1, LabSpec, and TerraSpec – providing visitors with an opportunity to see the variety of instrumentation options at the newly formed Malvern Panalytical.

Over the course of the three-day expo, we received a total of 182 guesses. The guesses ranged from a low of 250 to a very high guess of 50,375. The average guess was 3,052 which is quite good, considering the actual number of particles in the jar was 2,607.

Ben Mehl, a chemistry graduate assistant at St. Louis University, was the winner of the contest, with his guess of 2,562. When asked how he was able to come up with his guess, Ben responded with the following:

“As far as the guess, that’s basically all it was. I saw there was a mix of sizes, so I couldn’t just try to do the math of particles per layer. My gut just thought around 2,500, and I thought it would be more interesting by writing an oddly specific number. I’m in the last year of my Ph.D, so any extra money to use at Amazon will surely help.”

Congratulations to Ben and thank you to everyone who visited the Malvern Panalytical booth and took part in our contest.

We look forward to seeing you at future events, and you never know what we may have in store at one of our booths, so make sure you stop by and say hello, here is the event we’ll attend his month.
