Continuous, timely particle size analysis is required to demonstrate the efficiency of filters used to separate water droplets from fuel oils, in accordance with ISO 16332. This standard only recommends laser diffraction for the application which requires technology suitable for:

  • Dirty process streams.
  • High pressure measurement.
  • Explosive duties.

Laser diffraction systems capable of high concentration measurement, such as Spraytec and Insitec, avoid the need for sample dilution, which can distort droplet size. Such systems simultaneously meet broader requirements for water-in-oil emulsion monitoring within the petrochemical industry.

Fuel filters remove rust, paint chips and any undissolved water to ensure efficient and safe combustion within the engine. Large water droplets are reasonably easy to remove, but increasingly the water is present in the form of a fine emulsion due to the presence of fuel additives which act as surfactants. Filters must be tested in accordance with ISO16332, currently under revision as a result of the changes in fuel formulations.

Insitec laser diffraction particle sizing systems span the particle size range 0.1 to 2500 microns and measure at a frequency that comfortably exceeds the requirements of the standard for filtration test rig monitoring (one averaged distribution per minute). With extensive application knowledge in the petrochemicals Malvern Panalytical works in partnership with equipment suppliers and customers, bringing the analytical know-how to ensure optimal solutions for these critical and demanding applications.
