Malvern Panalytical launches new detector for leading XRD platform to enable higher-accuracy measurements

Almelo, the Netherlands – On August 27, 2020, leading analytical instrumentation supplier Malvern Panalytical launched its new ‘1Der’ detector for its highly successful Empyrean X-ray diffractometer platform, under the slogan Empyrean brings new wonder to XRD. The 1Der will enable users to exclude fluorescence background from their final data, providing significant increases in XRD system capability.

Malvern Panalytical has a strong track record in XRD innovation. In 2001, Malvern Panalytical was the first company to introduce strip detectors to its platform, changing the world of diffraction forever. Building on this and subsequent detector firsts, Malvern Panalytical has now developed a new detector that yet again steps ahead in the field.

Through improved processing technology, the new detector enables the exclusion of unwanted fluorescence background. Specifically, it contains a state-of-the-art tunable band-pass which can be set closely around the scattering energy, as defined by different X-ray tube sources. This narrower bandwidth of energy discrimination means that other X-ray effects, such as fluorescence or white radiation (also known as bremsstrahlung ), do not obscure vital details in the diffraction pattern. This leads to a vastly improved signal to noise and low background in the data. What is more, together with the unique optics on the Empyrean, such as the iCore or Bragg-Brentano H D, the system provides a step-change in data quality.

This is the latest arrival in a large family of detectors available exclusively for Malvern Panalytical diffractometers and the technical specifications of the detector are chosen specifically for the requirements of a laboratory system. Unlike an off-the-shelf detector, where incorporation into a system requires compromise on usage possibilities, Malvern Panalytical’s new detector, is directly integrated into the Empyrean system for a fully versatile applications capability.

Fabio Masiello, group product manager – X-ray diffraction: " The new detector underlines Malvern Panalytical’s commitment to using the latest sensor technology to benefit XRD. With its state-of-the-art electronics, combined with the Empyrean’s unique optics, we’re providing users with a strong solution to unwanted fluorescence and a leapfrog increase in system capability. In short, Empyrean is opening a new world for wonderful XRD."
