When manufacturing or certifying metal powders for use in the additive manufacturing process, chemistry is paramount. Powder needs to comply with the alloy composition of the material specified, and grade must be carefully selected to control the interstitial elements present since both can impact the properties of the final component.

In addition, AM powders must be free from foreign particulate contamination such as other material batches at the powder production plant, the AM facility, or debris in processing/recycling equipment. A simple and fast way to analyze chemical composition and impurities in metal powders is X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

XRF is an ASTM certified technique that can accurately determine elemental composition and impurities in both powder samples and printed parts. And without the need for excessive sample preparation or wet chemical facilities. In this webinar we will show how XRF can be used across the metal AM value chain for powder, part and contaminant analysis.
