Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized renewable energy storage technology, not only for portable phones but also for storage in electric grid and the automotive sector. Consumer expectations on lithium-ion batteries have become more demanding. Batteries need to charge faster, weigh less, be smaller, store for longer yet perform better and safer. Battery manufacturers and researchers alike need to rely on multiple techniques to design and perform quality checks on such high performing batteries. In this free online workshop, Malvern Panalytical partners with NDC and our distributor in Taiwan, DKSH, to share with you on the cutting-edge technologies for battery cathode, anode, coatings and other raw materials.
Structural performance analysis using X-ray diffraction
利用 XRD 進行結晶結構特性分析
The important critical parameters which influence the battery performance are primary particle size, crystalline phases, composition, and coating thickness of the electrode materials. These parameters can be extracted from the data collected using X-ray diffractometry.
Crystalline phase composition defines the overall electrode material quality and its suitability for the battery cell manufacturing. X-ray diffraction is the technique of choice when it comes to the analysis of crystalline phases. Malvern Panalytical's X-ray diffractometer range which includes the Aeris compact XRD is an easy to use instrument with superb data quality. Battery researchers and QC managers use the Aeris for accurate analysis of:
• Crystalline phase composition and presence of any residual reactants (optimization of calcination process)
• Crystallite size (related to the primary particle size)
• Degree of graphitization in synthetic anode graphite
The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique is a non-destructive technique and heavily used in laboratory work for various applications such as identification and quantification of crystalline phases and average crystallite size analysis of synthesized powder materials. The extracted crystallographic information such as interlayer spacing can be used to calculate the degree of graphitization or the orientation index in graphite battery anode materials. Also important to know phase of cathode

Elemental analysis for energy density and charge cycles
The ratio between nickel, manganese, and cobalt in a battery’s cathode determines its energy density (and the lifetime of one charge cycle) as well as the number of charge cycles it can withstand. That’s where X-ray fluorescence (XRF) comes in. Although traditionally overlooked, it provides significant benefits to battery manufacturing. Specifically, our new benchtop XRF, Epsilon 4, can determine elemental composition in just 10 minutes during production.
Particle size and shape analysis for improved battery packing density, uniformity of coatings and more
Electrode material and battery slurry particle size and shape variations must be regularly measured and optimized throughout the production process to maintain consistent battery performance. Based on laser diffraction, our offers the easiest, most accurate way of measuring cathode and anode material particle sizes. And, for industrial process environments, it can be replaced by our to provide real-time data for process control. Our optical imaging tool can analyze the size and shape of statistically relevant ensembles of particles in just a few minutes.
Precise end-to-end gauging methods from basis weight to final thickness of coatings
The thickness of your battery coatings can highly impact your battery’s performance, safety and lifespan. NDC's measurement solutions for LiB component production stand apart from conventional gauging methods by offering a complete end-to-end gauging system from basis weight measurement of anode and cathode coatings to final product thickness measurement in the roll press line. All possible with NDC’s comprehensive solutions like the Photon Sensor, Micro Caliper Thickness Sensor and Laser Speed Pro.
