What makes particle sizing smarter?

As a diffraction specialist at Malvern, the topic of my latest webinar was smarter particle sizing, and how to make laser diffraction an open access technique in your lab. In this webinar I covered some of the things we have done to make the Mastersizer 3000 an easier diffraction system to use.

Firstly the hardware has been designed to be more intuitive. Now, this has led to quite a few comments comparing the dispersion units to coffee makers and kitchen appliances but that does mean that they look familiar and you can easily work out how to use them (or where you might put the coffee in!).

Secondly, we’ve changed the way that measurements are managed. Everything you need to see to control your measurement is on one screen, making method development easier and giving you instant feedback about the stability of your measurements.

But perhaps my favorite part of making the system smarter is what we can do with the data to help you to better interpret your measurements (although this might be because I’m a physicist and I like looking at lots and lots of data!). There is a data quality report that, for each individual record, lets you assess factors such as the cleanliness of the system, whether the measurement concentration is appropriate, and if your optical properties are appropriate. There are also stability reports that let you check the variability of your measurements against ISO and USP standards.
