Freeze Frame or Action Shot? Choosing the Right Option for Image Analysis

Images offer powerful insight into particle behaviour – from how they flow and dissolve to how they pack together. But how you capture these images makes all the difference?

Static vs. Dynamic Image Analysis: What’s the Difference?

There are two main approaches to automated image analysis: static and dynamic, each with unique advantages.

  • Static Imaging: Particles are dispersed onto a substrate and remain stationary while the substrate moves past the camera. This method ensures consistent lighting, focus, and optimal image quality. Plus, the ability to go back to particles for further investigation, and even the ability to add on chemical analysis

  • Dynamic Imaging: Particles are suspended in a fluid that flows past the sensor, capturing images as they move. This approach is faster and allows for high-throughput analysis.

Choosing the right technique

Each method has its strengths, depending on your sample type, image quality needs, and measurement speed.

Static Imaging:

  • Produces high-quality images with optimized lighting and focus.
  • Allows detailed investigation—e.g. change magnification and adjust lighting to inspect particles in different conditions
  • Ideal for applications requiring precise shape measurements, like additive manufacturing, where even slight variations in particle shape impact material quality.

Dynamic Imaging:

  • Faster than static imaging, capturing more particles in less time.
  • Image quality may be lower due to particles moving beyond the lens’s depth of focus.
