Mine’s a Guinness!

With the launch of the new Mastersizer 3000 2 weeks ago, we’ve been working hard to allow people to see it in the flesh. A trip to the Emerald Isle therefore provided an excellent opportunity for the first European outing for the system. So, a group of us headed off the Dubin last week, home of Guinness and the world-famous Irish welcome. The Croke Park venue in Dublin selected by Malvern’s long-time distributor, Particular Sciences, made the event even more special for those who attended.

A big venue for a system with a big size range

Croke Park is the home of Gaelic sport in Ireland and, with a capacity of 82,300, is the third largest stadium in Europe – only Wembley in London and the Nou Camp in Barcelona offer higher capacities. In the days before the seminar it had hosted a capacity crowd for the All-Ireland Gaelic Football final, which was won by Dublin! The party spirit was still present in the city when we arrived to set up for the seminar.

Although we did not pull in the same size of crowds as for the football, we did have a great audience and lots of participation at this broad-based characterisation seminar held over 2 days. All of the technologies offered by Particular Sciences and Malvern Instruments were showcased, prompting many questions regarding the way different techniques can be used together to better understand products and processes. OK – so I admit that I did not hear anybody say this phrase whilst I was visiting Ireland, but it does some up some of the feedback we received about the Mastersizer 3000 system! Those who were new to particle sizing were amazed that such a small system could measure over such a wide size range. Those familiar with the Mastersizer 2000 appreciated the advances we have made, particularly in designing the measurement manager ‘cockpit’ for controlling the system. By bringing all the measurement controls and result feedback together in one place, we’ve made sure method development can be simply and efficiently achieved.

All in all, it was a great event at which to premier the new Mastersizer 3000. Many thanks to Sean and his team at Particular Sciencies for their energy and enthusiasm!
