This webinar focuses on the application of NIR technology and snow & ice.

In this webinar you will learn:

- How NIR technology can be used to distinguish between snow and ice based on their spectral characteristics.

- Analysis techniques looking at spectral shapes and absorptions, as well as calculating broadband albedo from spectral, to compare with other datasets (e.g., pyranometers, that measure solar radiation).

- How NIR analysis can help identify snow and ice reflectance properties, including spectral radiance and light-absorbing impurities (LAI) such as black carbon/dust.

Panelist: Ulyana Horodyskyj, PhD, National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)
Ulyana Horodyskyj, PhD, National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)Ulyana (“Uly”) Horodyskyj holds a PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her PhD work involved multiple field seasons traversing over a thousand miles in Nepal, collecting data on glacial lake changes and the effects of black carbon and dust on snow/ice melt. Prior to earning her PhD, she completed a B.S. in Earth Sciences at Rice University and a Master of Science in Planetary Geology at Brown.

Uly, an adventurer and environmental steward, enjoys sharing her knowledge and working with students through National Geographic Student Expeditions (Iceland, in 2009/10) and the Girls on Ice science and mountaineering program on Mt. Baker (2014), run through the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Uly is currently a post-doc research associate at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (Boulder, CO).
