A range of analytical tools and techniques are employed in the discovery of evidence or examination of materials relevant to the investigation of crimes or to other legal proceedings. Such forensic evidence may take the form of biological samples, deposited trace materials and residues or contaminant, counterfeit or hoax materials.

Analytical instrumentation used in forensic studies has evolved to become ever more sensitive and provide novel information and increasing levels of detail, opening up new possibilities in legal investigations. Morphologically-Directed-Raman-Spectroscopy (MDRS®) combines automated particle imaging and Raman spectroscopy in one instrument. Provides particle size and shape analysis along with chemical identification, which makes the technique invaluable for discriminating between multiple components within a mix or for the detection of contaminant particles in a sample. A distinctive signature is provided that can help identify an object or substance, determine its source, or detect changes to its integrity resulting from contamination. Direct export of the Raman spectrum of an unknown particle from Malvern Panalytical's Morphologi 4-ID software to Bio-Rad’s KnowItAll® ID Expert, with its extensive chemical database, enhances the information gained by MDRS.

MDRS can be used to interrogate a variety of forensic evidence types, including:

  • Illicit drugs.
  • Counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
  • Hoax powders.
  • Soils.
  • Gunshot residues.
  • Contaminants of various types.
