Introduction to Mastersizer 3000

This page introduces the key features and characteristics of the laser diffraction particle size distribution measuring device, Mastersizer 3000.

Mastersizer 3000 is a device that can easily and quickly perform particle size distribution measurements over a wide range from 0.01μm to 3500μm. It is used as a “particle size analyzer” in various industries.
You can select the dispersion unit according to the condition of your samples such as powders, slurries, granulated products, and high-density samples, deliver them to the measuring unit in an optimal state, and compute the particle size distribution in a short time by reading the scattering patterns with two lasers, red and blue, and an optimally positioned detection system.

■ Dry Measurement

No need for dispersion! You can measure particle size distribution in the powder state.
In dry measurements, air is applied to the sample to disperse the primary particles and feed them into the measuring unit.
The main feature of the dry measurement using Mastersizer 3000 is that the dispersion pressure can be set according to the sample being analyzed.
For samples that are clumped, strong dispersion pressure can be applied, while for fragile particles such as some granulated products, the dispersion pressure can be set weakly to avoid breaking the particles with air pressure. Once the conditions are set and saved as an SOP file, measurements can be conducted immediately under the same conditions from the next time by reading the file.

■ High Concentration Measurement

Good news for those who have samples that you do not want to dilute! We have prepared a paste cell that avoids the “dilution” which was essential for particle size distribution measurements.

■ Small Quantity Measurement

For those with only a small amount of sample or who want to minimize the amount used for analysis, we have prepared the Hydro SV small quantity measurement unit, which can stably measure accurately even with small quantities.

■ Refractive Index Setting

Input of refractive index is essential for laser diffraction particle size analyzers.
Particularly for particles below 50μm, the particle size distribution is likely to change depending on the refractive index setting, as noted in ISO13320:2020. The refractive index input value varies depending on the type and surface state of the sample, making its setting as crucial in laser diffraction particle size distribution measurement as sample pretreatment dispersion.

In the Mastersizer 3000, the optimization of this refractive index setting can be checked in the software.

Malvern Panalytical will hold a seminar on refractive index setting at the Powder Technology Exhibition. Please join us!

◆ For Product Users ◆

■ Individual Consultation Sessions

Malvern Panalytical regularly holds individual consultation sessions for users of the Mastersizer series. We address requests from users who want to ask questions unique to their in-house samples, want discussions based on actual samples or data, which may be difficult in group trainings.
Consultations are handled by our application engineers who have extensive experience in various sample analyses. Content you have been struggling with for a long time may be quickly resolved.
In consideration of the difficulty of travel, data discussions are also conducted in an online meeting format. Please check the schedule and location on the website below and apply.

■ Training Sessions for Users

Training sessions for users to compactly learn the principles and tips of measurement in half a day are held more than once a year.
Even those who are not device managers, those who will be using the device soon, those who conduct specified measurements but want to know the mechanism, or those who do not perform work but need to interpret the resulting data are welcome to participate.
Training sessions are held irregularly. As seats fill quickly, register on our website or subscribe to our newsletter* to get information as soon as possible.
