Use of NIR Spectroscopy in Mineral Identification in Shale

Objectives:

(i) to estimate mineralogical composition specifically clay mineralogy from the spectra,
(ii) to qualitatively compare mineral concentrations calculated from XRF and XRD analyses, as well as mineral groups identified through SEM and microscopic petrography work with NIR results.

NIR spectroscopy has been widely used in different scientific fields such as biology and medicine. However, it has been rarely used in mineral identification in finer sedimentary rocks specifically mudrocks. This work will allow us to verify the accuracy of this technique compared with XRF and XRD.
