Achieving streamlined, accurate calibration for fused-bead XRF of geological samples

This application note shows that WROXI CRMs can be used with the compact Revontium® XRF spectrometer for the convenient, accurate and rapid analysis of 15 common oxides in a variety of geologically-relevant samples, including ores, cement, minerals and soil.

When X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis of a wide range of inorganic or geological samples is required on a daily basis, setting up and maintaining the necessary calibrations can be highly laborious. Malvern Panalytical’s WROXI certified reference materials (CRMs) address this issue by providing sets of commonly-encountered oxides that are applicable to a wide range of sample types.

WROXI CRMs are delivered as synthetic powders that can be prepared on-site as fused beads using the included lithium borate flux. All WROXI standards are manufactured under ISO 17034 accreditation, which means that they are traceable to pure compounds, and they are shipped with certificates stating certified values and their uncertainties.

The WROXI base set contains 15 multi-element standards for the analysis of the 11 oxides most commonly found in ores, minerals, slags and geological materials, and is shipped with monitors (to correct for intensity drift) and method templates. This can be complemented with several pre-defined or bespoke extension sets, of which the one for cement is described in this application note. This contains 9 multi-element standards for the analysis of 10 elements in cements and the raw materials used in their manufacture.
