Overview of NIR in Bauxite Exploration and Mining

Aluminum is the most abundant metal found in the Earth’s crust, the main source of which is the mineral bauxite. Aluminum and its alloys are used widely throughout the transportation industry from aerospace components to automobile and heavy-truck and trailer products. Global demand for aluminum continues to increase, particularly in China, the world’s largest aluminum user. Demand is also expected to increase significantly in Brazil, Russia and India. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy provides a valuable tool in the production of aluminum, from bauxite exploration through the smelting of alumina.
