Preci Corporation is a process engineering manufacturer handling equipment such as spray dryers that can instantly turn slurry into powder. When analyzing the powder produced during equipment condition examination, we found that, despite using the same raw material for spray drying, some resulted in good fluidity while others did not. The difference could not be found with conventional particle size measurement alone.

The spray dryer is a machine that sprays slurry and instantly dries it to make powder. Powder made with a spray dryer becomes round with good fluidity and a sharp particle size distribution.

In the analysis of spray dried powder, particle shape as well as particle size distribution are very important factors. These two powders were spray dried from the same raw material with almost equivalent particle size distributions, including D_v,50 (diameter at 50% volume distribution).

However, as you can see, their fluidity shows completely different behavior.

When these powders are analyzed with the Morphologi, significant differences in particle shape, such as circularity and aspect ratio, can be observed.

Elongation (1-Aspect Ratio): The closer to 0, the more circular

Furthermore, by analyzing the particle size distribution based on count, differences in fine powder volume can also be confirmed.

As such, there are cases that cannot be resolved by measuring volume-based particle size distribution alone, and the Morphologi, which enables analysis of count-based particle size distribution and particle shape, is an indispensable analytical tool for us.
